Martín DeLeón


Martín DeLeón started his artistic career in the 70’s in Buenos Aires, (Argentina).
During this time, he would sing his own compositions as well as songs by Joan Manuel Serrat and Alberto Cortezat café-concerts with Miguel Saravia (his first sponsor), the group Opus 4, renown guitarist Cacho Tirao and Brazilians Vinicius de Moraes and Maria Creuza, among others.
Martín DeLeón arrived to the United States in 1975 under contract with “Café Latinoamericano” in Manhattan, where he shared the stage with Facundo Cabral, Ginamaria Hidalgo and Maestro Savicas among others.
In 1976 he performed at New York’s Town Hall together with the “Los Chalchaleros,”an Argentinean folklore group, and comedian Luis Landriscina.
In 1978 he held his first concert at the Carnegie Recital Hall with the show “Nueva Canción Latinoamericana.”
Martín DeLeón discovered Tango while closing the show“The Best of Serrat & Cortez” at the Cami Hall in New York. Encouraged by singers like Alberto Castillo, Alberto Podestá and Alberto Echagüe,he now sings Tango almost exclusively, as it reaches deep within his soul and roots.
In 1984 Martín performed throughout the USA with “The Center for the Performing Arts”.
The success of his hit “No Me Llames Extranjero” (Don’t Call me Foreigner)took him to The Astrodome, The Coliseum and The Astroworld of Houston, Texas, being the first Argentinean artist to perform at those venues.
While in New York, he performed at the “Summer Festival” at the World Trade Centerwith artists like Tito Puente, followed by two concerts at the Village Gate with the show “Tango y Candombe” directed by Maestro Jorge López Ruiz.
In 1987, he presented “Tango at The Village Gate” directed by Rodolfo Alchourrón,with guest artist Charlie Palmieri.
In the same year, Martín was chosen by Maestro Astor Piazzola to perform his“María de Buenos Aires”.
Also in 1987 he performed at the United Nations celebrating “100 Years of Gardel”.He was interviewed by PBS, which aired nationwide.
He has also performed at WABC New York Channel 7 in the program “Tiempo”.
In 1992, Martín DeLeón participated in a tribute to Maestro Astor Piazzolaheld in New York with Al Di Meola, Dino Saluzzy, Gary Mulligan and the quintet directed by Maestro Raúl Jaurena.
With Jaurena’s help, he realized his dream to interpret Piazzola’s “María de Buenos Aires”with the Washington Pan-American Symphony Orchestra.
Martín DeLeón returned to Argentina in 1993 sharing the stage with Rubén Juárez, Alba Solís and Raúl Lavié at the “Café Homero”.
In 1994 Martín DeLeón toured Japan for over two months.
In 1995, he toured in Argentina with Raúl Lavié, performing in cities like Cordoba and Bahía Blanca (Martín’s birthplace) where they also performed atTV Channel 9, among other important venues.
The success of the album “Timeless Tango” directed by Maestro Bebu Silvetti and performed by Martín DeLeón, Horacio Salgán, José Colángello, Osvaldo Piro, Cacho Tirao, Omar Valente, among others, prompted the TV show “SoloTango” to requestMartín DeLeon to perform a special for the show.
In 1996 he performed with Maestro Mariano Mores at the piano, for the Jean Cartier de Oro Awards ceremony at the Miami Hilton’s famous "Tropigala Club".
He was named Florida’s "Distinguished Visitor" at the "Festival Argentino" in Miami,where he also performed at the “First Tango Festival”together with Argentino Ledesma, Horacio Deval, Alberto Podestá & Jorge Valdez, receiving the Best New Artist Award.
Martín DeLeón is well known throughout Latin America. In Ecuador, he has performed at the Guayasamín Foundation,the “Casa de la Cultura”, the Argentinean Embassy in Quitoand also at the summit of Latin American Presidents in Guayaquil. Nicaragua and Santo Domingo have also witnessed Martín’s powerful performances.
He was the special guest at the “First Argentinean Week” in Mexico, DF, Poliforum Siqueiros.
In 1999 Martín DeLeón toured Canada as part of the show “Tango Vivo.”
In 2000, DeLeón joined “Tango Dreams,” performing throughout the United States and touring Israel in 2001.
In 2001, he performed Piazzola’s “María de Buenos Aires” once again, in Washington, DC.
That same year, he performed Carlos Gardel in the show “El Dia Que Me Quieras” (The Day when You Love Me) with Los Angeles’ Reading Theater troupe.
He also performed, for over five months, with the show “Beats of Passion” at The Venetian Hotel in Las Vegas, NV.
In 2003, Martín DeLeón performed with “Tango Dreams” and the San Diego Symphony Orchestra in New Mexico as well as The Long Beach Arena in Los Angeles, CA.
In 2005 back on stage at theNational Hispanic Cultural Center in Albuquerque, New Mexicowith Piazzola and Ferrer's “María de Buenos Aires”where Martin performs one of the most important roles of the play.
Since October of 2005 Martín DeLeón has joined "FOREVER TANGO" World Wide Tour.
Martín DeLeón is considered one of the most controversial Argentinean performers.To Martín, there is only one “Tango.” He tries to incorporate songs by new composers with new perspectives into his repertoire,without forgetting the classics he so admires and respects.
Martín DeLeón is true to his art and ideals.He always speaks his mind and shows a Tango without false pretenses, with great admiration and respect for women. His show is one that reflects the world in these ever-changing times.

Los comienzos de Martín DeLeón se remontan a los años 70 en Buenos Aires, (Argentina) con el movimiento de café-concerts, junto a Miguel Saravia (su primer padrino artístico), Opus 4, Cacho Tirao, Vinicius de Moraes, Maria Creuza, entre otros.
En el año 1975 llega a los Estados Unidos contratado por el “Café Latinoamericano” de Manhattan.
Actuando junto a Facundo Cabral, Ginamaría Hidalgo y el maestro Savicas entre otros.
En ese entonces interpretaba a Serrat, Cortez y temas propios.
En el año 1976 comparte el Town Hall de New York con Los Chalchaleros y Luis Landricina.
1978 realiza su primer concierto en el Carnegie Recital Hall,con la “Nueva Canción Latinoamericana”.
El Tango y Martín se descubrieron mutualmente allá en los 80',cerrando un ciclo de baladas en un recital en el Cami Hall, presentando “Lo mejor de Serrat y Cortez”.
En 1984 realiza una gira por todo el país con el “Center for the Performing Arts”. El éxito y grabación del tema “No me llames extranjero” lo llevan a ser el primer artista Argentino que actúa enel Astrodome de Houston, el Colliseum y Astroworld de la misma ciudad.
A su regreso en New York y se presenta en el "Festival de Verano del World Trade Center" junto a artistas de la talla de Tito Puente, seguido por dos recitales en el no menos famoso Village Gate con el espectáculo “Tango Y Candombe” dirigido por el maestro Jorge López Ruíz
Al año siguiente, 1987, “Tango at the Village Gate” dirigido por Rodolfo Alchourrón presentando como artista invitado a Charlie Palmieri.
Ese año fue elegido por el maestro Astor Piazzolla para hacer “María de Buenos Aires”, también ese año actúa en las Naciones Unidas en los “100 años de Gardel” siendo entrevistado por CBS en un reportaje que se difundió a toda la nación.
Desde ese entonces se dedica al Tango, apadrinado por Alberto Castillo, Alberto Podestá y Alberto Echagüe, actuando como primer artista en el programa “Tiempo” para la cadena WABC Canal 7 de Nueva York.
En el año 1992 en Nueva York, participa de un homenaje al maestro Astor Piazzolla, actuando junto a Al Di Meola, Dino Saluzzi y Gary Mulligan con el Quinteto del maestro Raúl Jaurena.
Gracias al maestro Raúl Jaurena logra realizar su sueño de hacer “María de Buenos Aires” junto a la Panamerican Symphony Orchestra de Washington.
En el año 1994 viaja a Japón donde realiza presentaciones por más de dos meses.
El gran retorno de Martín DeLeón a Argentina se produce en el año 1993, presentándose junto a Rubén Juárez, Alba Solís y Raúl Lavié en Café Homero.En 1995 con Raúl Lavié realizan una gira por el interior del paísabarcando entre otras las ciudades de Córdoba y Bahía Blanca (su ciudad natal)donde participan en programas de televisión en Canal 9 de esa ciudad, cantando a dúo “Balada para un Loco”.
Luego realiza un especial para SoloTango en TV, motivado por la grabación de “Timeless Tango” con el maestro Bebu Silbetti,participando en la grabacion de una colección de 15 CDs de tango. Además de Martín, participaron Horacio Salgán, José Colángello, Osvaldo Piro, Cacho Tirao y Omar Valente, entre otros.
En 1996 se presenta en Miami en el famoso "Club Tropigala" del Hotel Hiltonen la entrega de los Premios Jean Cartier de Oro a las primeras figures del espectáculo Latino,acompañado en el piano por el maestro Mariano Mores. Ese mismo año es nombrado Visitante Ilustre de Florida en el Festival Argentino.También en Miami participa en el Primer Festival del Tango junto a Argentino Ledesma, Horacio Deval, Alberto Podestá y Jorge Valdez entre otras figuras, siendo nombrado Revelación del Festival.
En Latinoamérica Martín DeLeón es una figura reconocida,especialmente en países como Ecuador donde se presentó en la Fundación Guayasamín, y en Casa de la Cultura. Además en la Cumbre de Presidentes Latinoamericanos en Guayaquíl y la Embajada Argentina de Quito.Nicaragua es otro de los países testigos de su avasalladora personalidad.
También fué invitado especial de la Primera Semana Argentina en la ciudad de México, Poliforum Siqueiros.
En 1999 realiza una gira por Canadá como miembro de la compañía “Tango Vivo”.
En el año 2000 se incorpora a “Tango Dreams”, presentándose en numerosas ciudades de los Estados Unidos y realizando una gira por Israel en el año 2001. Ese mismo año, se presenta nuevamente con la ópera “María de Buenos Aires” en Washington, DC. También ese año personifica a Carlos Gardel en “El día que me quieras”con el Teatro Leído de Los Angeles.
En Las Vegas, Nevada actúa por más de cinco meses en elShow “Beats of Passion” C2K del Hotel Venetian.
En el año 2003 se presenta en New México con "Tango Dreams" y la Orquesta Sinfónica de San Diego, show que se repite en el Long Beach Arena en California ese mismo año.
En 2005 se pone nuevamente en escena, esta vez en elNational Hispanic Cultural Center de Albuquerque, New Mexico,la operita de Astor Piazola y Horacio Ferrer “María de Buenos Aires”,donde Martin desempena uno de los roles mas importante de la obra.
Desde Octubre del 2005 Martín DeLeón integra el elenco estable de "FOREVER TANGO"en su gira mundial
Para Martín, el tango es uno solo, y él lucha por mostrar nuevos autores, con propuestas actuales, sin dejar de lado, por supuesto, los clásicos a quienes admira y respeta.
Martín DeLeón es uno de los artistas Argentinos más cuestionados por expresar siempre lo que piensa, y por tratar de mostrar un Tango sin falsos sentimentalismos y respetando siempre a la mujer.
Martín DeLeon, un ser humano comprometido a su arte y a su postura social, presenta un espectáculo de acuerdo a la época y a lo que se esta viviendo en este momento en el mundo.
